Dark pool share: 36% off-exchange — 13pp below the market
Off-exchange prints never touch the public book, so they move size without moving the quote. That is the point of using them. Most of the day cleared on the lit market — either there was nothing to hide, or the large players sat out. Short share of the off-exchange piece: 52% vs a 53% norm.

What it means: ECL shows a strongly call-favored options stance with no new positioning data available; standing positions lean heavily toward upside bets (0.34 put-to-call ratio) and recent trading volume mirrors that bullish tilt. Off-exchange activity is running slightly below normal for the stock, with short-selling at a typical level, suggesting no hidden accumulation or distribution pressure.
News vs the money
Ecolab Keeps Raising Dividends While Rivals Cut Them
The options market is priced for upside (three times more calls than puts in open positions), but no new money has entered recently, so this bullish lean reflects older conviction rather than fresh buying.

Pest Control and Sanitation Contracts Keep Renewing Despite Stock Collapse
Options traders are positioned for upside (call-heavy), but the lack of fresh positioning and below-normal off-exchange volume suggest this view is not being actively reinforced by new institutional money.

Pest Control and Sanitation Contracts Renew Reliably Even as Stocks Tumble
Options positioning remains call-heavy, but no new contracts have opened recently, indicating the bullish lean is static rather than building.

Three Industrial Stocks With 25+ Years of Unbroken Dividend Raises
Call-heavy options positioning aligns with the dividend-strength narrative, but the absence of new open interest means traders are not actively betting on acceleration.

Ecolab: A Dividend Aristocrat Anchored in Essential Global Services
Options traders favor calls over puts by a wide margin, and the stock is trading near the call-strike wall at $300, consistent with bullish positioning—but no new money has entered to push the bet further.

What is a “divergence”?
A divergence is when the news narrative and the institutional money flow point in opposite directions — a bearish headline while large call premium is bought, or heavy dark-pool selling under a bullish story. It signals the crowd and the desks may disagree.
How to read these numbers
Dark-pool volume — The share of trading executed off-exchange, at wholesalers and dark pools. About half of all US share volume prints there on an ordinary day, so the level by itself says almost nothing. What carries information is the distance from this name’s own recent norm, and whether the off-exchange size ran above its usual.
Off-exchange short share — How much of that off-exchange volume was sold short. The median across all listed names is about 49%, because wholesalers filling retail buy orders sell short and cover later. A reading near half is plumbing, not a bearish vote — compare it to the same name’s own 20-day norm.
Max pain — The price where the most options expire worthless — positioning often gravitates toward it near expiry.
Call wall / Put floor — Strikes with the heaviest call/put open interest — they often act as short-term resistance and support.
Put/Call ratio — Below ~0.7 leans bullish (more calls); above ~1 leans defensive (more puts).
