Dark pool share: 33% off-exchange — 16pp below the market
Off-exchange prints never touch the public book, so they move size without moving the quote. That is the point of using them. Most of the day cleared on the lit market — either there was nothing to hide, or the large players sat out. Short share of the off-exchange piece: 64% vs a 55% norm.

What it means: PPG shows mixed positioning: traders are buying calls over puts in recent flow, but standing option positions remain balanced, and off-exchange activity leans short (64% vs. a 55% norm) in a distribution regime—suggesting institutional trimming rather than accumulation. The stock sits just below max pain (106), with modest squeeze pressure (30/100).
News vs the money
PPG rated Hold as margins squeeze and automotive refinish segment stumbles
The Hold call aligns with cautious positioning: recent call buying shows some optimism, but off-exchange short activity and distribution regime reveal institutions are quietly trimming, not accumulating.

PPG vs. Asahi Glass: comparative analysis of two materials companies
No new option positioning data; standing positions remain balanced with a call-lean flow, but without fresh conviction trades, the comparison alone does not shift the cautious institutional stance visible in dark-pool distribution.

PPG to report Q3 2026 earnings on October 27
The earnings date is a calendar event with no new positioning; current option setup (balanced, modest squeeze, price near max pain) suggests the market is waiting for clarity rather than betting hard either way.

⚡ DIVERGENCEDividend Kings underperform in September; PPG among those appearing undervalued
The undervaluation narrative contrasts with off-exchange distribution and short-leaning dark-pool activity, suggesting institutions may see value differently than dividend-focused analysts—or are hedging before earnings.

PPG promotes scientist Venkateshwarlu Kalsani to associate fellow
Personnel news carries no direct option signal; the balanced call-lean flow and distribution regime remain unchanged, so this organizational positive does not yet shift institutional positioning.

What is a “divergence”?
A divergence is when the news narrative and the institutional money flow point in opposite directions — a bearish headline while large call premium is bought, or heavy dark-pool selling under a bullish story. It signals the crowd and the desks may disagree.
How to read these numbers
Dark-pool volume — The share of trading executed off-exchange, at wholesalers and dark pools. About half of all US share volume prints there on an ordinary day, so the level by itself says almost nothing. What carries information is the distance from this name’s own recent norm, and whether the off-exchange size ran above its usual.
Off-exchange short share — How much of that off-exchange volume was sold short. The median across all listed names is about 49%, because wholesalers filling retail buy orders sell short and cover later. A reading near half is plumbing, not a bearish vote — compare it to the same name’s own 20-day norm.
Max pain — The price where the most options expire worthless — positioning often gravitates toward it near expiry.
Call wall / Put floor — Strikes with the heaviest call/put open interest — they often act as short-term resistance and support.
Put/Call ratio — Below ~0.7 leans bullish (more calls); above ~1 leans defensive (more puts).
