Short share of that
55.0% (norm 64%)
Dark pool share: Off-exchange volume ran 2.4× its norm — and only 55% vs a 64% norm of it was short
Off-exchange prints never touch the public book, so they move size without moving the quote. That is the point of using them. Volume rose while the short share stayed low, meaning most of that extra size was not sell-side. This is what quiet accumulation looks like on the tape.

What it means: Institutions are quietly accumulating UGL shares off-exchange at nearly 2.4× normal volume while short-selling there at well below their typical rate—a classic stealth-buy signal. The options market shows balanced positioning (calls and puts nearly even) with minimal squeeze pressure, suggesting calm accumulation rather than panic or euphoria.
News vs the money
⚡ DIVERGENCEWall Street stays half-bullish on gold despite sharp Friday drop
News reports mixed sentiment after gold's slide, but the money shows institutions buying quietly off-exchange at 2.4× their normal pace and covering shorts—a divergence between headline caution and actual accumulation.

Gold's debt-warning rally faces a pullback, but the macro case remains intact
The narrative emphasizes gold's macro warning signal, and the off-exchange accumulation at depressed short levels confirms institutions are treating dips as buying opportunities, not abandoning the thesis.

Fed split and central-bank gold demand keep the metal 'on the radar'
The story highlights Fed uncertainty and foreign central-bank gold demand, and the money confirms it: large quiet accumulation off-exchange with minimal hedging (low put-call ratio) suggests conviction in the structural case.

Gold hits a speed bump but analysts cite $40 trillion debt as a long-term bull case
News acknowledges near-term volatility but maintains bullish conviction on debt, and the money aligns: institutions are accumulating on dips with short covering, not rotating out.

⚡ DIVERGENCEGold breaks below its 200-day trend line as rate-hike bets resurface
The headline frames a technical breakdown tied to renewed hawkish Fed talk, but the money shows institutions accumulating at 2.4× normal volume with short covering—treating the break as a dip to buy, not a reversal signal.

What is a “divergence”?
A divergence is when the news narrative and the institutional money flow point in opposite directions — a bearish headline while large call premium is bought, or heavy dark-pool selling under a bullish story. It signals the crowd and the desks may disagree.
How to read these numbers
Dark-pool volume — The share of trading executed off-exchange, at wholesalers and dark pools. About half of all US share volume prints there on an ordinary day, so the level by itself says almost nothing. What carries information is the distance from this name’s own recent norm, and whether the off-exchange size ran above its usual.
Off-exchange short share — How much of that off-exchange volume was sold short. The median across all listed names is about 49%, because wholesalers filling retail buy orders sell short and cover later. A reading near half is plumbing, not a bearish vote — compare it to the same name’s own 20-day norm.
Max pain — The price where the most options expire worthless — positioning often gravitates toward it near expiry.
Call wall / Put floor — Strikes with the heaviest call/put open interest — they often act as short-term resistance and support.
Put/Call ratio — Below ~0.7 leans bullish (more calls); above ~1 leans defensive (more puts).
