Dark pool share: 42.6% off-exchange — a normal session
Off-exchange prints never touch the public book, so they move size without moving the quote. That is the point of using them. Both the share and the size sat inside this name's usual range. Nothing unusual to read that day.

What it means: IAU shows balanced positioning with a slight call lean in recent trading, but no new options positions opened to signal conviction either way. Institutional activity off-exchange is muted and normal-sized, suggesting neither accumulation nor distribution pressure.
News vs the money
Hot Chili reports more copper-gold finds at La Verde in Chile
The news is exploratory upside, but options traders show balanced call-and-put positioning with no new conviction bets, suggesting the market is not pricing in a gold rally from mining news alone.

⚡ DIVERGENCEGold retreats as bond yields rise and the dollar strengthens
The bearish headline aligns with options traders leaning slightly toward calls over puts, a mismatch that suggests traders may be positioning for a bounce rather than accepting the downtrend.
WSJ · 10/07
⚡ DIVERGENCEGold extends losses toward key support as sellers dominate
The bearish technical call contrasts with a slight call-heavy flow in options, indicating traders may be buying dips rather than capitulating to the downtrend.

⚡ DIVERGENCEChina's central bank buys 21 tonnes of gold in September, the most in three years
The bullish headline—large official demand—sits alongside balanced options positioning with no new upside bets, suggesting institutional traders are not yet pricing in sustained central-bank-driven strength.

⚡ DIVERGENCEGold slips below a key trendline as high interest rates pressure bulls
The bearish technical and macro narrative is undercut by a slight call lean in options flow, hinting that traders may be viewing the dip as a buying opportunity rather than a sign of deeper weakness.

What is a “divergence”?
A divergence is when the news narrative and the institutional money flow point in opposite directions — a bearish headline while large call premium is bought, or heavy dark-pool selling under a bullish story. It signals the crowd and the desks may disagree.
How to read these numbers
Dark-pool volume — The share of trading executed off-exchange, at wholesalers and dark pools. About half of all US share volume prints there on an ordinary day, so the level by itself says almost nothing. What carries information is the distance from this name’s own recent norm, and whether the off-exchange size ran above its usual.
Off-exchange short share — How much of that off-exchange volume was sold short. The median across all listed names is about 49%, because wholesalers filling retail buy orders sell short and cover later. A reading near half is plumbing, not a bearish vote — compare it to the same name’s own 20-day norm.
Max pain — The price where the most options expire worthless — positioning often gravitates toward it near expiry.
Call wall / Put floor — Strikes with the heaviest call/put open interest — they often act as short-term resistance and support.
Put/Call ratio — Below ~0.7 leans bullish (more calls); above ~1 leans defensive (more puts).
