Dark pool share: 27% off-exchange — 22pp below the market
Off-exchange prints never touch the public book, so they move size without moving the quote. That is the point of using them. Most of the day cleared on the lit market — either there was nothing to hide, or the large players sat out. Short share of the off-exchange piece: 71% vs a 54% norm.

What it means: IBB's options market shows balanced positioning with a slight call lean in recent trading, but dark-pool activity reveals institutional distribution: 71% of off-exchange volume was sold short (17.5 points above the fund's norm), and that off-exchange share itself ran 21% below the 20-day average, suggesting institutions are trimming size quietly and avoiding the public book. Squeeze pressure is minimal, and the fund sits just below the $210 max-pain level.
News vs the money
⚡ DIVERGENCEVanguard's cheaper healthcare ETF vs. iShares' biotech-focused IBB: which is better?
The money shows institutions quietly selling IBB positions off-exchange at elevated short rates, which contradicts a neutral comparison story—the market is actively trimming biotech exposure, not treating it as a stable hold.

⚡ DIVERGENCEPharma wins tariff exemption, but biotech ETF shrugs—here's why
Dark-pool distribution (short-heavy off-exchange selling at 71% vs. a 54% norm) and below-average off-exchange volume suggest institutions are exiting positions despite the tariff news, not accumulating on the policy win.

iShares biotech ETF vs. Simplify's broader health-care play: which offers better value?
The money shows no new option positioning to signal conviction either way, but dark-pool activity leans toward distribution (short-heavy, below-average volume), suggesting institutions favor neither fund strongly right now.

Envestnet cuts its IBB stake by 8.5% in Q2
Envestnet's Q2 reduction aligns with the current dark-pool distribution pattern (71% short, below-average off-exchange volume), confirming that institutional appetite for biotech exposure has cooled.

XLV (broad healthcare) vs. IBB (biotech focus): risk, returns, and diversification trade-offs
No new option positioning to indicate a shift in conviction, but dark-pool distribution and below-average off-exchange volume suggest institutions are not aggressively rotating into either fund right now.

What is a “divergence”?
A divergence is when the news narrative and the institutional money flow point in opposite directions — a bearish headline while large call premium is bought, or heavy dark-pool selling under a bullish story. It signals the crowd and the desks may disagree.
How to read these numbers
Dark-pool volume — The share of trading executed off-exchange, at wholesalers and dark pools. About half of all US share volume prints there on an ordinary day, so the level by itself says almost nothing. What carries information is the distance from this name’s own recent norm, and whether the off-exchange size ran above its usual.
Off-exchange short share — How much of that off-exchange volume was sold short. The median across all listed names is about 49%, because wholesalers filling retail buy orders sell short and cover later. A reading near half is plumbing, not a bearish vote — compare it to the same name’s own 20-day norm.
Max pain — The price where the most options expire worthless — positioning often gravitates toward it near expiry.
Call wall / Put floor — Strikes with the heaviest call/put open interest — they often act as short-term resistance and support.
Put/Call ratio — Below ~0.7 leans bullish (more calls); above ~1 leans defensive (more puts).
